Beginning in February 2019, the Marie Selby Gardens of Sarasota will highlight Paul Gauguin’s use of botanicals in achieving his vision of the savage, primitive and exotic. Gauguin: Voyage to Paradise will feature woodcuts and rarely seen works in other mediums by the artist along with botanical displays of lush tropical plants in the conservatory and gardens. These plants illustrate the deep impact of botanical imagery in Gauguin’s work.

UU of Lakewood Ranch has arranged a guided tour of the Gauguin exhibit. Interested participants will car pool to the Gardens to begin the tour at 9:30 AM on Friday, March 15, 2019. The cost will be $30 each for the guided tour and additional time to view the lush foliage in the gardens. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to hear Dr. Elizabeth Child’s lecture on the relevance of Gauguin’s work to post-impressionist art during the latter part of the 19thCentury.
- Please wear comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing. We also suggest you wear sunscreen.
- Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome, but please keep in mind that some of our paths are made of crushed shell, so sturdy wheels are advised. (Call ahead to 941-966-5214 x2100 to request one of our two wheelchairs, if you need one.)
- Historic Spanish Point is a smoke-free environment.
- Well-behaved, leashed dogs are always welcome on the property during regular museum hours, but are not permitted inside our buildings or on our trams. Please bring water for your furry friend.
- Please keep to the designated paths.
Picnic tables are available, so bring a lunch or snack! - Because Historic Spanish Point is an environmental museum as well as an archaeological site, we invite you to take many photos and leave only footprints.
map and learn as they go through site-wide interpretive signs.
Docent-Guided Walking Tours: Offered based on docent availability. These tours do not require advance reservations, but may not be offered on all days or at all times. If a tour is available, visitors may sign up while purchasing their admission tickets at the front desk.
Daily Tram Tours: If walking the site seems daunting, this may be the tour for you. These docent-led tours require advance reservations, so please call ahead to book a spot on a tour.
Continuous Tram Loop (offered November 1st through March 31st): During our peak season, tram drivers are available on site to help transport visitors around the site, reducing the amount of walking necessary. These are NOT docent-led tours, but simply transportation between stops.
Group Tours: For groups, we require two-weeks advance reservation in order to prepare accommodations. Please call ahead to reserve this tour.
HISTORIC SPANISH POINT’S
History
A multi-faceted history awaits you at Historic Spanish Point.
While Historic Spanish Point is a complex museum with many layers and facets, there are four main elements to the overall story. To help our visitors understand them, we refer to them as the “4 Ps of Historic Spanish Point.” Prehistory, Pioneers, Palmer, and Plants. Take time to explore these elements.
PREHISTORY
With an archaeological record that encompasses approximately 5,000 years of Florida prehistory, this National Register of Historic Places museum is referred to as one of the largest intact actively preserved archaeological sites of the prehistoric period on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Life in Key West is a day at the beach: April 9-11, 2019.
As one of our UULWR activities, we are planning on a trip to Key West in April.
Information including maps and telephone number contacts for reservations are included on the Key West Page of UU LWR Activities. You will need to make your own reservations for the catamaran ferry and for the accommodations you select. Please contact me if you want to be included in the get-together dinners when we are in Key West.
The Key West Express (the catamaran high speed ferry boat) has special lower cost vouchers available before 25Dec2018. This voucher costs $99 for a round trip ticket as compared with a regular round trip ticket that costs $155.
This will be a fun get-away with two get-together group dinners to give us the opportunity to socialize together and reminisce about what we have experienced in Key West, and yet have most of our time unscheduled so that we can each move at our own pace and do the many things that might be of interest to ourselves.
Hoping you each will find this to be a fun and relaxing and low-key experience, the Activities Committee looks forward to your joining with us. Any questions please contact Alan Cate - alan.cate@gmail.com

To borrow a quote from Ray's Canoe Hideaway (nope, not mine) -Everyone deserves a good paddle now and then!
For any of you LWR UU's that have expressed interest in a "beginner's paddle", wondering what those Fruitville DUUK's have been enjoying, here is your opportunity. I Ray Halperin am willing to lead, and provide some basic instruction, to those interested.
This would be on the Palma Sola Bay Trail. See the link below. Download the guide and scroll down to page 34 or so. We will launch on the north side of the Palma Sola Causeway #5 (Manatee Ave. West) at 10:30 AM I’m pushing our launch back an hour because the cut over to Perico Bayou will be more navigable on a higher incoming tide. We will paddle up the Robinson Preserve trail, cut over to Perico Bayou on Flamingo Loop trail and then south around to our end point at the Palma Sola Boat Ramp parking lot, across the street from our launch point.
I’m planning to bag lunch afterward, at the county Palma Sola Beach Pavillion (covered tables and restrooms) just east of our launch site.
To rent a kayak for the trip you may contact Julia at Surferbus, Shawn is usually out with clients. Single kayaks rent for $30 for 4 hrs. See the link below for phone numbers.
Please let me know via email: southwindsray@gmail.com that you will be going (with your cell phone number) so that in case of inclement weather I can contact you the night before. Also, please call me if you emailed a positive response, but need to back out at the last minute.
Let's plan to do this on February 21. 2019 Thursday.
